Chevrolet Silverado Performance Diesel Concept
What's Special About It?
You don't always think of diesel and performance in the same breath, but this specially prepared Silverado might change your mind. Using GM's 6.6-liter Duramax engine as a base, Chevrolet's engineers set out to give this Silverado enough power to make the biggest V10s of the truck world take notice. Thanks to a revised intake system, massive intercooler and free flow exhaust, this oil burner cranks out an unheard of 700 pound-feet of torque. A reprogrammed version of the standard heavy-duty Allison transmission handles the torque up front while a beefy 11.5-inch rear end assures that all the power gets to the rear wheels. A lowered suspension reinforces the performance nature of the truck along with custom wheels and tires.
What's Edmunds Take?
Diesels may have a reputation as smoke-belching tow trucks, but there are plenty of owners out there who know all about their potential as performance vehicles. The gas engines may throw out a lot of horsepower, but it's torque that really gets you going in a hurry. We don't expect to see any production versions of this truck on dealer lots anytime soon, but for those who have always yearned to see diesel get some attention Chevrolet finally came through. — Ed Hellwig
