The Silverado Hybrid is based on the GM two-mode hybrid system. The truck uses GM's Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT) and nickel metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS) paired with the GM 6.0-liter V8 gasoline engine. The truck can "launch" purely on electrical power and reach speeds of 30 mph before the engine kicks in, GM says.
The Silverado Hybrid will come in two- and four-wheel-drive models with the crew cab body style. Fuel economy is said to be 40 percent better in the city and 25 percent better on average than that of the comparable current Silverado. It also has 6,100 pounds of towing capacity.
Pricing has not yet been announced for the truck, which is set to hit dealerships late next year.
What this means to you: You know hybrids are here to stay when a vehicle of this ilk adopts the technology. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
