A combination of stacked headlights and an extra dose of chrome gives this Silverado a different look up front, while the rest of the truck reveals only minor changes to the current design. At first glance, it looks as though this might be a Stepside model, but when you look closer at the front-quarter panels you can see that the Chevrolet design team exaggerated the front wheel arches as well. It breaks up the lines of the typically flat quarter panels, but we're not so sure it's much of an improvement.
This truck also reveals a few hints of added utility for the Silverado. Up top, there's a new roof rack, which should help add a little cargo area to make the crew-cab models more family-friendly. This falls in line with a prototype we spotted just last week which was equipped with a bed-mounted utility rack. Another feature seen on earlier prototypes was the existence of adjustable tie-down rails inside the bed itself. This feature was pioneered by the Nissan Titan, and has since become common on compact trucks. It's part of the 2007 Toyota Tundra's features list, so it's not surprising that Chevrolet added it as well.
Both the Chevrolet Silverado and its GMC Sierra twin will likely offer the same engines and transmissions already being used in the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon SUVs. Starting with a base 4.8-liter V8 with 290 horsepower, the lineup is also expected to include two 5.3-liter V8s. Both versions of the 5.3-liter V8 will have approximately 320 hp and cylinder deactivation for improved mileage, but one will also offer the ability to run on E85.
Although the GMC Sierra is likely to offer GM's 6.2-liter V8 on top-of-the-line Sierra Denali models, Chevrolet may only get a detuned version of the same motor. A new six-speed automatic transmission will be used with the top-line V8, while lesser versions will use a four-speed auto. Once production of GM's new six-speed transmission increases, we expect it will be offered across the board.
Earlier spy pictures of the Chevrolet Silverado's interior show a much improved design. Unlike previous GM trucks, the cabins of the Silverado/Sierra twins won't be identical to their SUV cousins. Higher-grade materials and additional high-tech options like navigation systems should make both the Silverado and the Sierra more stylish and comfortable inside.
Expect to see the GMC Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado make their official debuts sometime this fall, with sales beginning in early 2007.
