Sneak Peek: 2007 Chevrolet Silverado Caught Naked

DETROIT — Intrepid spy photographer Brenda Priddy and her team have captured the first images of an undisguised 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, revealing details of the big truck's all-new sheet metal.

Priddy said her crew captured the vehicle, a red Silverado Crew Cab with a Z71 off-road package, as it was being discreetly photographed at an advertising shoot.

The next-generation Silverado and its companion, the GMC Sierra, are being totally overhauled for model-year 2007, with revised cabins and updated mechanicals. GM has paid particular attention to dramatically upgrading the trucks' cockpits, adding richer materials, fresher designs and more features.

The full-size pickups share their basic underbody architecture and a number of chassis and driveline components with the redesigned Tahoe, Suburban and Avalanche that were introduced earlier this year.

The new Silverado won't be a carbon copy of the Suburban and Tahoe in exterior styling. The front-end design is unique and distinctive, with stacked headlamps to set it apart from its SUV sibs.

Among the new powertrain features that should help enhance fuel economy are a six-speed automatic transmission and a displacement-on-demand system for optional V8 engines that will permit them to run on only four cylinders under part throttle.

GM had intended to release the new pickups in spring 2007 as '08 models, but pulled their launch ahead to this fall.

What this means to you: Chevrolet's new Silverado is a looker. We'll see how much of an impact it makes in this crucial segment in the fall.
