    What Is It?
    Chevrolet Silverado SS Regular Cab

    What's Special About It?
Unlike the production Silverado SS that gives up some speed in order to make it more practical and comfortable, this SS concept truck is built for speed from top to bottom. With its regular-cab, short-bed configuration, the Silverado SS concept is the most compact and lightweight of all Chevy full-size trucks. Typical comfort and performance features like air conditioning and thick carpet were stripped out leaving nothing but rubber floors and a bench seat. The engine is a reworked version of GM's 6.0-liter Vortec V8 engine rated at a healthy 395 horsepower and 409 pound-feet of torque. All that power runs to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission topped with a proper Hurst ball shifter knob. In place of the standard rear leaf springs, Chevrolet engineers swapped in a five-link setup borrowed from the Tahoe sport-utility. There's also a limited-slip differential, 3.73 gears, specially tuned Bilstein shocks, reduced height Eibach springs, a thicker front roll bar and 20-inch wheels and tires that combine to give this SS some serious handles in the turns.

    Why Should You Care?
Although labeled a concept, there's nothing about this truck that couldn't easily find its way to the production line. Compared to the somewhat watered down extended-cab version that's scheduled to debut in early 2003, this lightweight, high-power short bed is just what the doctor ordered when it comes to fending off those pesky Lightnings and SRT Rams.
