At last year’s Detroit auto show, Chevrolet quietly announced that it would add the Orlando utility vehicle to its lineup in 2011.
The seven-passenger Orlando is now in the prototype stage and our spy shooters recently caught a few test mules lapping at GM’s Milford test track.
Like the Orlando concept shown in 2008, the production version features a squared off nose and what looks like a Chevrolet corporate grille. The distinctive sloping roofline also remains intact but the windows have been enlarged for improved rearward visibility.
Built on the same front-wheel drive platform as the upcoming Cruze sedan, the three-row Orlando is designed to compete with similar people movers like the Mazda 5 and Kia Rondo.
It will use four-cylinder engines and should deliver mileage in the high 20s. Sales are expected to start in early 2011.
