DETROIT — Thirty-five-year-old Crystal Windham has been named General Motors' director of North American passenger-car design, retroactive to November 1. Windham will head interior design for global midsize, compact and small cars for GM North America. She is notable as the first African-American woman to be named to design director status at GM.

Windham was a lead designer on the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. She has been with General Motors North America Design since 1994 including a stint at GM's German affiliate Adam Opel AG in 1997-98. She was promoted to design manager of interiors in 2002 and was involved in the interior design of the 2007 Saturn Aura as well as the Malibu.

"Our design vision...led us to create the best exteriors in GM's history. I am excited to show our newest interiors [to] the world," said Windham.
