The combination improves fuel economy and gives buyers a cheaper alternative to the Malibu V6 LTZ.
"This new Malibu LTZ model answers customers' calls for a premium-equipped car with an efficient four-cylinder engine," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager, in a statement.
The new LTZ model will go on sale this week. It is priced at $26,545, including a $650 destination charge. It is $1,200 cheaper than the LTZ with the V6, which starts at $27,745.
The new LTZ with the 169-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder Ecotec engine returns 22 mpg in city driving and 32 mpg — a 2-mpg economy boost — on the highway.
Chevrolet said the Malibu LTZ with the four-cylinder engine gets 17-inch Chrometec wheels and a single chrome exhaust outlet. It has the same cabin as the LTZ models with the V6 engine.
