2006 Chevrolet Malibu SS
What's Special About It?
Brent Dewar, GM vice president of marketing and advertising, sums it up just about perfectly when he says that the new supercharged Malibus are nothing but "guilt-free fun."
Both the regular Malibu SS and the Malibu Maxx SS will be powered by a 3900 V6 with VVT capable of 240 horsepower and 245 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with a Hydra-Matic 4T65-E four-speed automatic transmission that features a manual-shift mode and adaptive shift control. Both vehicles also feature a sport-tuned suspension, along with 18-inch flangeless wheels and tires, which GM claims are the best in their segment.
Special SS-series appointments include SS-specific front and rear fascias with the blacked-out cross-hatch grille pattern, projector beam foglamps, a rear spoiler and dual chrome-tipped 3.5-inch chrome exhaust tips.
As on the regular versions of the vehicles, the primary difference between the Malibu SS and Malibu Maxx SS is the longer wheelbase of the latter. Even though the Maxx features more rear-seat room and cargo space, as a byproduct of its extended wheelbase, it is actually shorter overall than the regular Malibu.
These two midsize sedans will start rolling off GM's assembly lines starting in this fall.
What's Edmunds' Take?
The Malibu has always been a pretty decent option for buyers attracted to its value. The Malibu SS and Malibu Maxx SS will definitely strike a chord with those looking for the day-to-day drivability of the Malibu, combined with a little bit of extra oomph. — Phil Lienert
