Chevrolet Malibu Cruiser
What's special about it?
Well it's pretty hard to miss the Sublime Lime paint job. But even more eye-catching than the bright green paint are the smooth lines of this economy-sedan-turned-street-machine. The extensive body modifications include a larger front clip, a cowl induction hood, deep front and rear fascias, extended rocker trim and a brushed aluminum gas cap cover. Deep-tinted glass and clear headlight and taillight covers complete the sleek look of this Malibu concept.
Under the hood rests a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that pumps out a healthy 230 horsepower and 286 pound-feet of torque. The suspension is lowered 1.5 inches and features coilover struts and four-wheel disc brakes. The Evo five-spoke 19-inch wheels are wrapped with ultra low-profile Toyo Proxes tires for the perfect stance.
With bucket seats front and rear, the Malibu is strictly a four-passenger cruiser. Carbon fiber and Kevlar accents are sprinkled throughout the interior, and polished aluminum cupholders highlight the custom center console. The Kenwood mobile entertainment system features radio, CD, DVD, TV, multiple amplifiers and a 10-disc changer.
Why should you care?
Surprise, surprise GM takes its most sedate economy sedan and turns it into a slick-looking street machine. Completely overlooked by the tuner crowd, the Malibu is one of GM's best designs. The Cruiser's sharp looks may finally convince the aftermarket that the Malibu is a viable tuner vehicle. Even if the Malibu never catches on, at least it shows that GM is aware that economy sedans need to be more than just dependable and practical. Ed Hellwig
