WASHINGTON — General Motors is recalling 11,905 2012 Chevrolet Impalas in the U.S. and Canada because power-steering fluid could flow onto the catalytic converter and an engine compartment fire could occur, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

GM issued a stop-sale order on the 2012 Impala to Chevrolet dealers on July 28, according to documentation filed with NHTSA.

The automaker said that on July 21 "a thermal event" in a vehicle occurred at the Oshawa, Ontario assembly plant during dynamic vehicle testing. GM said in a statement on Friday that it knows of no crashes, injuries or complaints related to the problem.

The affected vehicles have a 3.6-liter V6 engine.

"The upper power-steering hose may have been misrouted so that it can come in close proximity to and/or contact the catalytic converter," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "With the engine on, heat from the catalytic converter may melt the power-steering hose. Power-steering fluid could flow onto the catalytic converter and an engine-compartment fire could occur."

Chevrolet dealers will inspect the Impala to make sure that the upper power steering hose is routed correctly and make the necessary repairs.

GM told the federal government that it has called all owners of the 2012 Impala to inform them of the recall, but says that the recall's official start date is today. Owners can contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.

Of course people still buy "this thing".  It's a reliable, full-sized sedan (HUGE trunk!) that gets 29MP (Hwy)and can be bought for around $25K (right now there's $3K-$4K in incentives).... and it's Made In America.  That's more than enough for a significant segment of the population here in the "Middle" United States.  People with 3 kids or teenagers who don't want an Minivan, SUV or crossover (or can't afford the ridiculous prices for most  of those, either).  Older people who want a large car but don't want to bust the pension.  Rental fleets gobble these up (really, it's the ideal car when you are on vacation with lots of luggage)

Really, what are it's competitors?  You can't touch a Taurus, Avalon, 300 or Lucerne for less than $30K, and I don't think Hyundai is pushing the Azera (starts at $28K), so for the $25K price, you cannot get this large a sedan anywhere else.....

I'd rather drive the Dodge Charger, but it is so "hot" right now so you WILL pay more for it.

A Thermal Event, "puleeze" call it like it is - - - fire, fire, fire ! Or maybe it's a cover for something more sinister like some employees trying to copy the Chrysler workers lunchtime "smoking weed" events!

Vikasdesai, honestly man I would not bring Honda and their lousy transmissions in this thread.  Check your facts before spewing crapola like this.

lions208487, I'm laughing so hard my gut hurts.  Your comment on GM, Nissan, Honda and Subaru having recalls is hilarious, have you forgotten the king of recalls?  TOYOTA!!!

Or is it because maybe you drive one?

    LOL

the reason police loved and still do the crown vics was because theyve been around so long that they were indestructable... this car is getting so old that it should be near perfect by now!

I want to support GM, and even though this recall was very limited in numbers. GM has had several small recalls on things lately.

Yes every manufacturer goes through some, eg. Nissan, Honda, even Subaru, but it's time for GM to make cars to meet this new generations expectations. The Malibu is a fantastic car, but the Impala needs a reboot. How about the highly suggested Chevy badged G8 that has been rumored since 09?

Did anyone tell Vikas that Honda just recalled 2.5 million cars worldwide?  Kinda makes 12k seem pretty insignificant.

Just search recall on IL and see the number of vehicles recalled. Every manufacturer is bad according to you guys.

"What would GM do without the poorly educated midwesterners who buy there products."

An already ignorant comment is made even more so by pointing toward the inadequate education of others.
