GM Recalls 2009 Chevrolet Impala for Airbag Problem

    1 Rating
WASHINGTON — GM is recalling 79 of its 2009 Chevrolet Impalas because a piece of the front passenger-side airbag could break and strike and injure vehicle occupants, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Although the recall is small, it is critical to note because Chevrolet dealers need to install a new passenger-side front airbag in the affected vehicles.

"Some of these vehicles have a passenger-side front airbag inflator that could fracture at an inflator tube during a deployment," NHTSA said in its recall summary of the problem. "During a passenger-side airbag deployment, pieces of the inflator tube could strike and injury [sic] vehicle occupants, and the airbag cushion would not inflate fully, reducing the capability of the bag to protect the passenger."

The recall is expected to begin in mid-October. Owners of the 2009 Impala can contact Chevrolet at (800) 630-2438.
