A turnaround for automakers like General Motors is going to come largely on the shoulders of ordinary vehicles like this 2010 Chevrolet Equinox the company unveiled at this year’s Detroit Auto Show.

Although the vehicle rides on essentially the same platform as the previous Equinox, it does get a substantial upgrade in terms of both exterior and interior style. The front end now takes on the look of other Chevy’s like the Malibu and Traverse.

Inside, look for the latest electronics like Bluetooth, touchscreen navigation and a hard drive for storing music – plus six standard airbags. Thankfully, the Equinox continues to offer rear seats that can move back and forth with as much as eight inches of adjustment.

Two new engines are featured as well – base models get a four cylinder Ecotec 2.4 liter, a 3.0 liter V6 with a six speed automatic is optional.

Both engines use direct injection technology which delivers more power and better fuel economy.

With the newly redesigned Equinox, it looks like Chevrolet is making good on its promise to deliver more fuel-efficient SUVs. Combine that with reasonably attractive styling and an upgraded interior and the 2010 Chevy Equinox should be able to run head to head with other small SUVs.
