General Motors Expands Range of Direct-Injection Engines

    0 Ratings
PONTIAC, Michigan — General Motors will launch the redesigned 2010 Chevrolet Equinox next summer with two new direct-injection gasoline engines: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter V6. GM said it expects the EPA to rate the inline-4 at 30 mpg in highway driving.

The new Ecotec 2.4 delivers 180 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. It shares its DI technology with the 260-hp turbocharged Ecotec 2.0-liter that powers the Pontiac Solstice GXP and the Chevrolet Cobalt SS.

The new 3.0 V6, which borrows from the existing 3.6 DI engine, is rated at 255 hp and 214 lb-ft. That compares with 304 hp and 273 lb-ft for the 3.6 DI V6 that powers the Cadillac CTS.

GM said V6 gasoline direct-injection engines also will be fitted to the 2010 Cadillac SRX and the 2010 Buick LaCrosse, both of which will join the 2010 Equinox on display next month at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Inside Line says: Although the technology is more costly and complex, the automotive world continues to move toward direct injection for a simple reason: more power and efficiency from less displacement. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
