The 2009 Chevrolet Equinox FWD LS starts at $25,010, including a $695 destination charge.
"Getting best-in-class fuel economy and great storage for less than $24,000 is significant," said Ed Peper, GM North America vice president for Chevrolet, in a statement. "In fact, the starting price for this all-new model is $1,800 less than the previous-generation Equinox."
The base 2010 Equinox gets the smaller and more fuel-efficient 182-horsepower 2.4-liter inline-4. The base 2009 Equinox is powered by a 185-hp 3.4-liter V6.
Chevrolet on Wednesday reported that sales of its crossovers, like the Equinox, increased 19 percent compared with February 2009 sales. The Chevrolet HHR, Equinox and Traverse combined for 14,844 total sales in March, the automaker reported. Overall, GM sales were down 45 percent in March versus a year ago.
Inside Line says: Traditional economic theory suggests that you raise or maintain prices when a commodity is selling. But these are crazy times, and GM clearly wants to keep the crossover momentum going. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
