DETROIT — The base 2011 Chevrolet Cruze LS will start at $16,995, including shipping, when it arrives in showrooms in September. The pricing slots the new Cruze in below the base 2010 Ford Focus S, but slightly ahead of the base 2010 Honda Civic DX.
GM said on Thursday that the Cruze will be offered in four models. The base Cruze LS gets a standard 1.8-liter Ecotec engine and a six-speed manual transmission.
The Cruze LT will start at $18,895 and come equipped with a standard 1.4-liter Ecotec turbo engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. The Cruze Eco will start at $18,895 and include the same engine, along with standard 17-inch alloy wheels with ultra low-rolling-resistance tires and an enhanced aerodynamic performance package.
The uplevel Cruze LTZ will start at $22,695 and include a standard 1.4-liter Ecotec turbo and six-speed automatic transmission, along with such standard features as cruise control, automatic climate control and 18-inch alloy wheels.
In comparison, the 2010 Ford Focus S starts at $17,015, including shipping. The 2010 Honda Civic DX starts at $16,405 including shipping. The base 2010 Hyundai Elantra Blue starts at $14,865, including shipping, while the 2010 Hyundai Elantra GLS starts at $17,615.
"While some of our competitors may have a lower starting price, Cruze wins on value once these competitors are optioned up," said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet marketing vice president, in a statement.

This article infers that a manual is not available with all Cruze trims. This contradicts Edmunds' 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Road Test Review which states 'the six-speed manual transmission' is 'standard for all trim levels' (http://www.edmunds.com/chevrolet/cruze/2011/testdrive.html?tid=edmunds.h..topfeatures.tdcruze.*).
What is correct?

Remember when compacts were below $10k, well, now they are reaching the $20k mark.
The reason, they are bigger, and the dollar is weaker.
I still think the 1.8L engine is too weak, it is the same engine used in the Saturn Astra.
They should consider the old Ecotec 2.2L from the Cobalt for this car, I am sure you could get at least 37 mpg (highway) with the six-speed auto transmission, and it is very reliable.

Its not a winner, only Chevy praisers (I know of one wanting this since he had an older Camaro) and people who think they should buy American would really consider this over a competitor.
This segment is all small cars and they do not carry the muscular look very well, hence why most do radical designs to set them apart. This is one of the most lackluster designs for a car that I've seen. It looks like an appliance car like a Toyota, rather than a sporty or at least INTERESTING car like the Mazda 3 and the Civic.

When they offer one with a 6M and the Ecotec 2.0L DI Turbo and at least as many performance and handling goodies as the Cobalt SS, maybe.

Finally a good effort from GM on a small car but the bloated price??? IT'S A FRIGGIN CHEVY!!! For GM to neglect the small car market for so many years and come out with something that is more expensive than a Civic is quite bold. The resale value won't hold true to the price. It just isn't the great value GM says it is when you consider all aspects.

Yikes... looks like the world's most expensive Sentra to me.... without the ballsy 2.5L motor. I'll look forward to trying one out on my next Hertz rental in Minneapolis.

Nobody will pay $22k for a compact GM car. Yes for a Mazdas 3 Sport, a Lancer GTS, Civic EX or a Impreza 2.5i. Cruze will go to rental fleets as soon they come out and will be considered cheap trasportation like the Cobalt is. Remember when GM introduced the Cobalt as a "premium compact car"....enough said.
