Speed Racer Contest Puts a Mach 5-Inspired Corvette up for Grabs

HOLLYWOOD, California — Speed Racer fans have a chance to own an icon from the Japanese TV show with a Corvette inspired by the Mach 5. In anticipation of the upcoming Speed Racer movie, the custom Corvette is up for grabs in an online contest that requires both knowledge of the TV show-turned-movie and excellent text messaging speed.

Power for the pseudo Mach 5 comes from an LS1 V8 making 350 horsepower and mated to a six-speed transmission. The car is decked out with a custom red leather interior and a Bose sound system, while custom bodywork and decals draw from the Mach 5's rocketlike shape. The custom Corvette's value is placed at $100,000.

To enter, Speed Racer fans can visit the contest Web site and enter a phone number, or text "fast" to 90736. On Friday, April 18, participants will receive a text message with a Speed Racer trivia question. Chosen from among the contestants who answer the question correctly within 2 minutes, 10 finalists will be flown to Los Angeles for the movie premiere and to race toy cars for the Mach 5 'Vette.

Speed Racer premieres on May 9.

What this means to you: Keep your phone handy and texting thumbs warmed up if you want a shot at this one-of-a-kind Corvette. — Eric Tingwall, Correspondent
