DETROIT — Chevrolet is releasing a limited-edition Corvette recognizing the company's racing efforts. It's a bright spot for performance-car fans after news on Wednesday that General Motors is shutting down its performance vehicle operations. The Chevrolet Corvette GT1 marks eight years of GM's participation in the American Le Mans Series GT1 class.

Available in yellow or black, the Corvette GT1 features unique graphics inspired by the C6.R racing car including the signature Corvette driver flags and mascot "Jake." A full-width spoiler and chrome wheels are borrowed from the ZR1. Under the hood, there's a carbon-pattern engine cover with yellow Corvette lettering. The inside is treated with custom ebony leather and yellow stitching. GT1 badging appears on the seats, instrument panel and center armrest.

The GT1 package can be had on a coupe for $65,310, convertible for $71,815 or Z06 for $86,385. That's a markup of $7,840 over standard models. Coupe and convertible models also come with a performance exhaust and the Z51 performance package that adds Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, cross-drilled brakes and a stiffer suspension. Chevrolet will sell just 100 in each color and body style for a total of 600 Corvette GT1s in spring 2009.

In the eight years that General Motors has been racing for the Manufacturer's Championship in the GT1 class of the American Le Mans Series, Corvette teams have grabbed 70 victories and claimed five 24 Hours of Le Mans championships. GM is expected to pull out of ALMS racing after 2009.

Inside Line says: With HPVO gone, this could be the last special edition Vette for a while. — Eric Tingwall, Correspondent
