Vauxhall VXR8 Gets an LS3 Engine

LONDON, England — Vauxhall is upgrading its VXR8 super sedan with the LS3 6.2-liter V8 — the same engine that is found in the 2008 Chevrolet Corvette and the upcoming 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP.

The VXR8 is a sibling of the Holden HSV Clubsport R8. The Vauxhall, Holden and Pontiac sedans are all based on the Holden Commodore, and are built in Australia.

The LS3 engine replaces the 6.0-liter LS2 unit in the British-spec VXR8. Output climbs to 425 horsepower, but fuel economy remains the same. Vauxhall says cars equipped with an automatic transmission will see 0-60-mph times trimmed to 4.9 seconds.

Other changes for the VXR8 include optional 20-inch alloy wheels, a standard gearbox oil cooler and a new exterior color, Heron White. Prices start at $69,765.

What this means to you: Over here, the G8 looks like a bargain, at less than half the price of the VXR8. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
