SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — General Motors on Thursday jumped into relief efforts for Haiti with word that proceeds from a limited-edition Chevrolet Corvette at this weekend's 39th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction will be donated to the American Red Cross.
Earlier in the week, Chrysler announced that a special "eco style" Chrysler 300 autographed by celebrities at last weekend's Golden Globe awards will be auctioned to benefit relief efforts in Haiti. The car was signed by Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Nicole Kidman, Heidi Klum, Paul McCartney and others. Details of that auction have not yet been announced.
The Corvette bound for the Barrett-Jackson auction block on Saturday was the last of 427 cars built for North America and the only 2008 Z06 available in Crystal Red Metallic Tint Coat, said GM in a statement. It is equipped with a 505-horsepower 7.0-liter V8 engine and has spider design chrome Z06 wheels, a Stinger-style stripe on the front hood and a painted Z06 spoiler.
Corvettes are taking center stage at the Barrett-Jackson auction with organizers saying this is their "best offering of Corvettes" to date. A total of 125 Corvettes from 1954-2010 will cross the auction block through the weekend.
The GM Foundation has also donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross for Haitian relief efforts.
Many automakers are hustling to help. Toyota announced a $500,000 donation toward relief efforts, Honda pledged generators, equipment and $300,000 toward relief efforts and Hyundai donated $100,000 to the International Red Cross.
