Chevrolet Colorado Rally Concept Unveiled: 2011 Buenos Aires Auto Show

    Just the Facts:
    • Argentina is expected to get the second-generation Colorado pickup late this year or early next.
    • But there is still no definitive word on U.S. plans, if any, for the midsize truck.
    • The new Colorado was first seen in concept form earlier this year at the Bangkok auto show.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Chevrolet has unwrapped the Colorado Rally, another concept version of its redesigned midsize pickup, at the 2011 Buenos Aires Auto Show. But the brand still has not tipped its hand on whether or not the new truck will be sold in the U.S.

When the new Colorado turned up earlier this year at the Bangkok auto show, Chevrolet confirmed that a production version would go on sale later this year in Thailand, but declined to specify any plans beyond that.

Curiously, Chevy's press material for the Buenos Aires show refers to the new Colorado as its "global" truck.

The Colorado Rally double-cab pickup was whipped up at GM's South American design studio, with such features as perforated acrylic windows, 18-inch alloy rims, adjustable heavy-duty shocks, LED lighting, running boards, an integrated winch and a tool kit.

The truck gets a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine and all-wheel drive. Occupants are ensconced in neoprene-lined buckets with five-point belts and surrounded by a roll cage. Other cockpit highlights include a flat-bottomed sport steering wheel, a full gauge package, a GPS navigation system and a dashboard covered in textured leather.

Inside Line says: It's a slick-looking truck. Do Americans still care?

Man, this would be a perfect truck for me! It's like GM knows what I want in a trick out 4x4...

OK, I for one like this and would love to have a "small" 4-door truck, about the same size as our GMC Terrain crossover but with a bed in back and PLEASE put a hard plastic locking cover on it, ala the Chevy Avalanche and Ford Explorer SportTrac.  I want an option so I don't have to buy the dumb-looking Honda Ridgeline... and put in a fuel efficient engine (4 cyl turbo or a diesel) so I can get 25 MPG's.  That's the kind of truck I'll buy.... I DON'T want the full-size Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota or Nissan options and I'd rather buy American than an overpriced Tacoma or Frontier.... so please, Chevy, or even Ford, bring the new Colorado & Ranger to the U.S..... and Dodge/RAM/FIAT, why don't you sell something here that fits that description, too?  PLEASE?  Is it really too much to ask for?

Oh, and you're not cannibalizing your full-size truck sales when people like me WON'T buy a full-size truck since it won't even fit in our small suburban garage!  Seriously, I have enough trouble putting a Highlander in there, I don't want a full-size SUV or pickup!  Please!

Every compact truck (Frontier, Tacoma, Colorado / Canyon and Ranger) currently being offered for sale is extremely stale, in terms of the fact that none have been significantly upgraded or changed in years.  Unfortunately, with the V6 engines (or the joke of the 5 cylinder in the Colorado) none of these small trucks get significantly better fuel economy than full sized trucks.  Therefore, they do not sell well.  So now the conventional wisdom is that Americans will not buy small trucks.  To complete the circular logic, no manufacturer is talking about bringing in a new model.

The first major manufacturer (not counting an Indian or other 3rd world start-up) to come up with a fresh new design and a small diesel (or an otherwise more modern and economical drive train like a small gas direct injection turbo) will sell like hotcakes.  And all the so called experts will be surprised, because they were sure that Americans did not like small trucks.

"A style truck with no functionality."

Yes, so strikingly different from all other 'concept' vehicles......

    Just what we need.

A style truck with no functionality.

nice looking truck, therefore no US release? the worlds largest consumer of trucks?

Finally Chevy builds a truck I would like to drive, aside from the perforated windows, and it's not coming over. I like the truck. It has about 95% of what I am looking for in a midsize truck. And I kinda like the look of it too.

It STRONGLY resembles the overseas only brand new Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series.  I'll bet we won't see this here.
