DETROIT — Spy photographers caught the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt prototype testing on public streets, providing the best look yet at the future compact sedan.

Covered in distracting but thin paint camouflage, the new Chevy shows off nearly every detail of its chunky new form. The Cobalt's front grille and headlight treatment are also clearly visible, as is its largely undisguised rear end.

The 2010 Cobalt will use General Motors' new global compact vehicle architecture, which is expected to be shared abroad with the Chevrolet Nubira and Daewoo Lacetti, as well as with the next-generation Saturn Astra and future Chevrolet Volt.

What this means to you: With the high cost of gas scaring big truck and SUV drivers into fuel-efficient cars, Chevy can't bring this one soon enough. — Kelly Toepke, News Editor
