Chevrolet said the turbocharged Cobalt SS will also get several options, including a $295 uplevel audio system, a $750 sunroof, a $195 high-wing rear spoiler and a $495 limited-slip differential.
In comparison, a base 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt LS coupe starts at $14,585, including destination. Standard features on the Cobalt SS include air-conditioning, a premium sound system, remote keyless entry, electronic stability control and OnStar.
The top-end Cobalt SS gets a 260-horsepower turbocharged and intercooled 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine linked to a five-speed manual transmission. Chevy says it sprints from zero to 60 mph in about 5.7 seconds. The Cobalt SS also gets the new FE5 sport suspension, which includes specific stabilizer bars, spring rates and damper tuning.
Exterior touches on the Cobalt SS include a standard deck lid spoiler, new front upper and lower grilles with an SS-specific diamond-mesh appearance and an airdam-style front fascia. The cabin gets a specific gauge cluster, an A-pillar-mounted turbo boost gauge and a specific shifter arrangement.
