    What Is It?

    2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

    What's Special About It?

This replacement for the nearly decade-old Cavalier should give Chevy fans a reason to celebrate. The Cobalt doesn't look anything like the Cavalier we've come to know and…well, just know. Instead, its overall look reminds us of a more familiar car in this segment - the Honda Civic. The coupe communicates a sporty theme while the sedan is still a little more on the conservative side.

Like the troubled but popular Ford Focus, the Cobalt will be offered in a variety of trim levels that include base, LS and LT variants as well as an SS coupe and sedan. There will also be a supercharged SS version of the coupe that's expected to produce horsepower numbers in the neighborhood of 200. So, if you've been looking for Chevrolet to bring a Civic Si or SVT Focus competitor to market, looks like your wait is over. Other engine choices include a 140-hp, 2.2-liter Ecotec engine and a 170-hp, 2.4-liter Ecotec engine that uses variable valve timing technology. A five-speed Getrag manual and four-speed automatic are the transmission choices.

The Cobalt offers plenty of standard features like a CD player and driver information center. Plenty of small cars today offer tons of standard features for a low price so the Cobalt doesn't really trump the competition in this area. However, optional features like heated leather seats, XM radio and OnStar push the Cobalt closer to the top of the heap with regard to luxury features.

    What's Edmunds' Take?

Chevrolet has been curiously absent in the import wars leaving the SVT Focus and SRT-4 to battle against such segment leaders as the Civic Si and the Sentra SE-R. This is what Chevrolet used to be about; affordable transportation owners could be proud of and budget performance cars. The pricey SSR and Corvette are keeping Chevy's muscle heritage alive, but perhaps with the SS Cobalt, more of us regular folks can afford a quick coupe with a bowtie on the trunk. — Brian Moody
