DETROIT — General Motors is about to open the order-ticket book on its 2011 Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle — for law enforcement orders only. This is the third in GM's police-vehicle lineup; the automaker also offers a PPV version of the Impala — with front-wheel drive, whereas the Caprice is rear-wheel drive — and a Tahoe PPV.
The Caprice PPV has a 6.0-liter V8 that makes 355 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed transmission with sport shift calibration for "performance driving," GM says. The GM StabiliTrak system comes in "police performance" mode for more stability in high-speed driving on the Caprice model.
Among the police-specific features, the Caprice PPV has sculptured seats to fit gun-belt-wearing officers, and the driver information center features a "Trap Speed" feature to track another vehicle's speed.
Orders for the detective package will be taken starting in October for April 2011 delivery, while the police package Caprice will be available to order next January for June delivery. In the interim, GM is taking its new Caprice PPV on a tour of police chief and sheriff conferences for the remainder of the summer and early fall. Pricing has not yet been announced — but GM does have a dedicated Web site for the car.
Inside Line says: Chevrolet has a long history of supplying police-specific vehicles, dating back to the 1959 Chevrolet Biscayne police model with a specially tuned 348-cid V8 and a top speed of 135 mph — not to mention a set of '50s-classic rear wings. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent

Pardon Me...I meant Caprice. The Impala is okay for plainclothes use.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the horsepower rating on the new Impala. Handling is important and this new car is probably as good as if not better than the G8.
Worth noting too, the radio is always faster than the car...

Tetra, it's tuned for fuel economy on 87 octane.
The same engine makes 400hp on a performance 91 octane tune in the '05 and '06 GTO.

this is definitely Holden. it looks a lot like the G8 so maybe it'll handle the same?

355 horsepower and 384 lb-ft ... out of a SIX LITER V8. Not particularly impressive anymore. I suppose that since it's destined for police work, though, that maybe it's particularly bulletproof rather than tuned for peak torque or power.

I think I would be more scared of the Dodge Charger behind me than this.
