DETROIT — Steve Saleen is filling out his stable of high-performance neo-pony cars with the introduction of the 2010 SMS 620 Camaro at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. The Camaro joins two cousins, the SMS 460 Mustang and the SMS 570 Challenger, in the SMS Supercars performance corral.
Due to reach the market in the second quarter, the SMS 620 Camaro is fitted with a supercharged version of the General Motors 6.2-liter V8, massaged to produce 575 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque in standard tune and a thumping 725 hp and 700 lb-ft in its wilder state. Customers can select from six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes.
SMS claims the 620 Camaro will jet from zero to 60 mph in less than 4.3 seconds, while the ultra-hot 620X Camaro shaves that time to nearly 4.0 seconds flat.
SMS upgrades the brakes, steering and suspension, and adds performance gauges and SMS sport seats trimmed in leather and Alcantara.
