Chevrolet Camaro T-Top Conversion Headed for SEMA

    Just the Facts:
    • Drop Top Customs will bring a Chevrolet Camaro with T-tops to the 2010 SEMA show next month.
    • The conversion can be made to any fifth generation Camaro.
    • Production starts in mid-November of this year.

    HIGH SPRINGS, Florida — Drop Top Customs, the same Florida-based custom car builder that offers a convertible conversion for the Chevrolet Camaro, has unveiled a new T-top conversion for the fifth-generation Camaro. It will be shown for the first time at the 2010 SEMA show in November.

    According to Company President Jeff Moran, "The installation utilizes our exclusive convertible understructure reinforcement. Most of these T-top Camaros will come supercharged, so there is no need for concern when you want to let your pony run."

    The conversion will cost $6,500 and production starts in mid-November. Drop Top Customs is the custom car arm of Convertible Builders LLC, which has been building conversions since 1976. Its convertible conversion for the Camaro debuted at last year's SEMA show.

    Inside Line says: Hard to believe it took this long for somebody to build a fifth-generation T-top Camaro. And as far as we can tell, they did a pretty good job. — Kelly Toepke, News Editor

    Interesting previous comments.  Here is my understanding of this T-Top concept.

    Droptop Customs uses their convertible understructure reinforcement to make the car stable and there is a rack in the trunk that slides forward to store the t-tops.

    Everybody is not going to like T-Tops, but the car is stable and the tops are convenient to use.  Someday they may have a smoked glass hatch to offer.

    As you can tell by my user name, I think this is flat out awesome!  Can't wait to see more detailed pictures of this.

    davicho:  I'm going to hold myself out as a greater authority on T-Tops than you.  At the very least, T-Tops have protective bags and a hold down system that prevents the issue you describe.  It is not normal procedure to take them off and leave them at home.  The best T-Tops (found on the 4th Gen Camaro/Firebird) have no bags but rather a rack built into the hatchback well - side them in and latch them down with the same mechanism that latches them to the roof.  Which lets you go from T-Tops on to Awesome in 30 seconds or less.   I've done it in stop and go traffic on occasion without holding anyone up.

    @davicho

    Hahaha! I think you may just want to avoid other risks while you're at it, you know... like not buying a burger in case they don't give you napkins at the drive-through causing you to spill ketchup on your shirt. Also consider avoiding very sharp pencils, as they can be... sharp, and if you're walking down some stairs while holding one it could jab you in the eye due to a banana peel left by a lazy vegetarian redneck who threw it out of his T-top Camaro as he left town to go lookin' for a good time.

    I've driven a car with T-tops (an MR-2) and they may be a pain to transport sometimes, but if it's gonna rain, well... you pull over and put them on your car. Kappish?

    Owned 3 different years with t-tops and each one leaked. Dealer could never figure out why. Hope they solved the problem.

    That is sweet. Just needs glass panels and a black roof, gtg.

    @phoenixc,

    You decide to take your "redneck" T-top POS Camaro out for a drive without the tops on and it is sunny when you leave, so you decide to leave your tops at home because you dont want to place them in the trunk or on the backseat because (even though they may have a protective lined bag (@vetteboy68) you dont want to get them scratched or dented in the possible shifting caused by a sudden duel with a Mustang 5.0 driver. So you start driving and later in your drive you experience the ocassional shower or perhaps rain, now your screwed because you have no tops and your interior is exposed to the elements (water). Kappish?

    Where is the white trash with the mullet?  Probably still driving his 89 Camaro and can't afford a new one.

    Hahaha! The advertisement next to the pics says the Camaro got "2010 Interior of the Year" by WardsAuto.com! What a joke!

    On an article-related note, I'm diggin' the T-top conversion, though I doubt I'd ever even think about putting extra cash down for one. Just get the convertible version: better visibility all around and just take off that stupid antenna on the back.
