DETROIT — The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Coupe, the most powerful Camaro in Chevy's history, now has a firm price tag. It starts at $54,995, including the $900 delivery fee, Chevrolet announced.
Drivers can increase the final cost by choosing one of the ZL1's six options. The six-speed automatic transmission with TapShift controls costs an extra $1,185. The 20-inch, bright aluminum wheel package is $470, while the power sunroof adds $900 to the bottom line. The stripe package runs $470 and the exposed-weave carbon fiber hood insert is $600. The final option is a suede package, including suede microfiber accents on the steering wheel, shift knob and shift boot, for $500.
What is standard is the heart of the ZL1's power--a supercharged 6.2L engine rated at 580 horsepower and 556 pound-feet of torque. The ZL1 accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 184 mph.
The ZL1 Coupe will go on sale in the spring of 2012, as a 2012 model. The Camaro ZL1 Convertible will go on sale in the summer of 2012, as a 2013 model. Its pricing will be announced later.
Inside Line says: The price of potent Chevy power has finally been revealed. It's $54,995.

meh, I'm not as optimistic the ZL1's chances against the new Shelby Mustang; I think the GT500 is going to be superior in every single aspect.
One thing that I can definitely agree on is that the new Camaro is the reason that the new Mustang is so awesome. If GM did not revive the Camaro, then I'll bet that the Mustang would still be rocking a 315 hp V8.

cardesigner82,
There were rumors a few years ago that Dodge was considering building a version of the Challenger with the V-10 engine from the Viper. If this were possible, it might allow the Challenger to compete with the ZL1 and GT500. Then again, the engine might not fit in the Challenger's engine bay and it might also contribute to significant weight gain and less ideal weight distribution. Although greatly outmatched, there is still the Challenger SRT-8. I am just grateful that these magnificent cars exist, especially during a struggling economy, high gasoline prices, and increasing CAFE standards. It's quite possible that our grandchildren might never know such power and performance in their adult lifetimes. Much respect!

"The Camaro ZL1 is an impressive car with impressive specifications. I will not dismiss it simply because the new Mustang GT500 has more horsepower and torque."
AGREED!
The new ZL1 has the latest iteration of the magnetic ride suspension, not the same as on the CTS-V. This may make it more interesting in curves, and not only straight line fast.
engineer_mba says:
"The GT500 has in the past demonstrated difficulty putting the power to the pavement and its weight has been a factor on demanding road courses, so its greater power may or may not prevail in the real world."
AGREED, again!
However, Ford has managed to keep the car under 4,000lbs @ 3,850lbs with 650hp. That's roughly 5.92hp/lb. The new GT500 has an OPTIONAL (key word) Performance Package that gets electronically adjusted dampers.

"The new GT500 just might be the better car....but would it be as powerful and as well designed if the ZL1 didn't exist? Probably not, and vice versa. They are both awesome cars and I am looking forward to the comparison tests that will put an exclamation point on a rivalry that has spanned decades."
Correct again!
Both cars have pushed each other to the envelope so much, and so RAPIDLY, that we forgot there was a 3rd party in Dodge. Unfortunately, for Dodge...it may be too little too late!
I guess all that is left is for the comparison tests. I think the Ford will be favored in some areas, and the Chevy will be favored in others. The editors may say something like "if you prefer a-b-c to x-y-z then Ford is your car, but if you choose x-y-z to a-b-c then Chevy is your ride!"

It's hard to believe that domestic companies still just don't get it. Price point isn't bad, but it doesn't make me want to sell my car and get one of these. Shouldn't an American citizen be able to buy an American car for less than the competitors? Amazing that one could pick up an e92 m3 for around the same price as this camaro. how often can one really use the amount of power this car has on a daily basis with the draconian laws exhibited almost everywhere in the states. I would much rather have a confortable sports car like an m3 over this anyday. has true lux, good power, and decent reliability.
I love how these domestic companies continue to screw American consumers, and are more worried about stealing business from other domestic companies instead of taking market share from the foreign companies. And they wonder why they had to take a bailout.

The GT500 has in the past demonstrated difficulty putting the power to the pavement and its weight has been a factor on demanding road courses, so its greater power may or may not prevail in the real world. Also, it has been proven time and time again that the car with the most power does not always take first place in comparison tests. It remains to be seen which car is the better total package in terms of power, performance, handling, precision and refinement. The new GT500 just might be the better car....but would it be as powerful and as well designed if the ZL1 didn't exist? Probably not, and vice versa.
