PHILADELPHIA — An empty nester with a yen for a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro like in the Transformers movies was in luck at a local dealership. John Goral's eye was caught by a silver Camaro SS at Thomas Chevrolet in Media, Pennsylvania, and it turned out to be the actual car awarded to last year's World Series MVP, Cole Hamels of the Phillies.

The left-handed pitching ace, then only age 24, was presented with a bright-red Camaro on the team's home field at the end of the decisive game last fall but was allowed to order one to match his own specifications. Hamels ordered a manual-transmission Camaro for his wife to drive. The Philadelphia Daily News reported that Heidi Hamels, who previously appeared on the TV show Survivor, hails from the Ozarks and only wants to drive a car with a stick shift. Unfortunately, when the silver Camaro arrived in May, it was equipped with an automatic by mistake, so Hamels turned it in and asked for a different one. Interestingly, Hamels himself says he can't drive a manual.

That was a lucky break for Goral, who says he didn't realize the car's pedigree even after he noticed the Phillies emblems on the Camaro, until the dealership staff explained it. "He swears he would have bought it anyway," the paper reported, noting that the Camaro has Bluetooth, satellite radio, customized console lighting and otherwise is "pimped to the max."

Goral reportedly is hoping Hamels will autograph the Camaro. The paper quotes him as saying he just might do that — after the season is over. The Phillies square off against the Colorado Rockies for the National League Championship, and Hamels is expected to start in game two on Thursday.
