Off the Pace: Chevrolet Won't Offer Indy 500 Camaro Replicas

DETROIT — When the Indianapolis 500 gets underway this weekend, a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS will be at the head of the field acting as the pace car. That's nothing new. The Camaro has paced the race five times since its introduction in 1967.

For the first time, though, Chevy won't build an Indy Pace Car replica for the street. In each of the model's previous stints (1967, 1969, 1982 and 1993), Chevy offered anywhere between 100 and 6,000 look-alikes for collectors and those who love logos and stripes on their cars.

"The new Camaro has and will pace a lot of races including Indy and Daytona," said Chevrolet spokesman Terry Rhadigan. "In order to keep special editions special, we can't go to that well too often. Plus, sales of the new car are phenomenal."

Chevrolet will make a limited-run Bumblebee-edition 2010 Camaro, timed for the release of the new Transformers movie this summer. So, it appears the summer blockbuster outguns the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.

Inside Line says: You want a 2009 Indy 500 pace car replica? You give us your 2010 Camaro SS RS and we'll call you when we're done with it. — Daniel Pund, Senior Editor, Detroit
