Chevrolet Borrego
What's special about it?
Car? Truck? SUV? Pizza delivery van? Hybrid, or crossover, vehicles are the latest rage for automotive manufacturers, and sometimes it's tough figuring out where the influences came from when you are looking at the latest offerings. The Borrego concept vehicle is part rally car and part pickup truck. Built on a Japanese-market Subaru Legacy platform (GM owns 20 percent of Fuji Heavy Industries, which in turn owns Subaru), the Borrego is designed to be both a daily commuter and an off-road racer. Off-road racing generally requires all-wheel drive, so the Borrego has the Legacy's all-wheel-drive system and turbocharged, 250-horsepower, 2.5-liter flat-four engine. Inside, the dual-dash design and long center console separate the cabin into two distinct areas for the driver and front passenger. Normally, the Borrego seats two, but it can hold an additional two passengers, thanks to a configurable mid-gate similar to the one found on the Chevy Avalanche. The Borrego becomes a 2+2 when the rear window is retracted, the mid-gate is slid rearward, and then the full roof, which is stored under the pickup bed, is snapped into place. The mid-gate window can then be raised again. In its standard two-passenger configuration, the Borrego's bed is about 6 feet long
Why should you care?
We doubt the Borrego will make it to production, but it is significant for a couple of reasons. First, it demonstrates the continually blurring line between cars, trucks and SUVs. It also indicates that GM is serious about utilizing Subaru's excellent all-wheel-drive technology. Don't be surprised to see a future GM production vehicle utilizing a Legacy or Impreza drivetrain.
