DETROIT — A Chevrolet Aveo hatchback inspired by the Aveo RS showcar will make its world premiere at the 2010 Paris Auto Show and is headed for showrooms in the U.S. in 2011, General Motors said on Wednesday.

The Chevrolet Aveo RS debuted at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show.

Chevrolet did not spell out U.S. specifications for the Aveo hatchback, saying in a statement that "final specifications of the new Aveo will be carefully tailored to each market in which it's offered."

It noted that Chevrolet's "first six-speed transmission on a small car be will be featured on the Aveo 1.4 and 1.6 as an option in most European markets; manual transmissions are of five- or six-speed depending on engine choice."

The European engine range includes two 1.2-liter four-cylinder engines at 70 and 86 horsepower, a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine at 100 hp and a 115-hp 1.6-liter unit. Aveo will also be offered with two versions of a 1.3-liter diesel engine in Europe, said GM.

Design elements on the hatchback include exposed twin headlamps and rear door handles "hidden" in the C-pillar.

In the cabin, the instrument panel is said to be "motorcycle inspired" and includes an analog tachometer combined with a digital speedometer. The front cabin has a wraparound fascia that can be color-coded to match the exterior.

GM said electronic power steering, stability control and antilock brakes will be standard.

Funny, I could have sworn that I rode in a Chevy Malibu last week that a coworker bought the week before. Unless Chevy had it on ice in a warehouse for years some reason, I'm guessing they sold it.

GM keeps saying they are going to offer the Spark in the US by 2012.

Once they start selling the new Aveo hatchback, the Spark does not make sense in the US.

By the way, "rear door handles "hidden" in the C-pillar" is getting old.

true, but these days, when your styling can be called "on par with VW" or "on par with chevy" you might as well tie an albatross to your neck with a barbed wire noose. then again, i'm not sure chevy even sells cars in the states anymore, seems like all they do lately is announce them. so maybe analyzing them is futile.

you dont have to be an artist to see this is nowhere near as cool as the concept. however, if you compare this to a newer vw, it's pretty much on par with a polo as far as styling

i realize that there isn't THAT much difference between this car and the show car that we saw in detroit, but as an artist who has an eye for subtle differences in lines, shapes, angles, etc, this finished product looks like they took the showcar, and handed it to the CEO of hertz car rental, and said, "here, make this look just bland enough to rent for $19 a day". what i'm trying to say is, chevy's amps clearly don't go to eleven. in fact, if they go all the way to ten, they are wasting two or three notches, minimum.

they've done the same thing with the orlando concept compared to the bland-o they're going to put on the dealer lots.

makes me a little wary of seeing what will become of the stingray corvette concept they've been toying with.
