What's Special About It?
Chevrolet and GM, in general, have long known they do not have a credible offering in the low-priced subcompact segment. The Cavalier is outdated and has a base price of almost $15,000. Compare this to entries from Kia and Hyundai which are selling small, affordable cars at around $5,000 less. The Geo, then Chevy Metro went out of production two years ago leaving Chevy without an entry-level compact.
Enter the Chevrolet Aveo. The Aveo is the result of GM's recent acquisition of Daewoo Motor Company's principal assets and is essentially a rebadged Daewoo Kalos, a car already on sale in other markets around the world. A four-door sedan and five-door hatchback will go on sale in early 2004. The Aveo will be produced by GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Company in Korea.
Powered by a 1.6-liter, 105-hp, DOHC four-cylinder engine, the Aveo should provide adequate power and will certainly appeal to those who cherish great fuel economy. Although the Aveo will be the lowest rung on the Chevy ladder, it still offers an impressive list of amenities. Air-conditioning, CD player and remote keyless entry are all standard equipment on the LS and are available as options on the base model. Special appearance packages featuring alloy wheels, foglights and mud guards are also available.
The Aveo is a nicely equipped compact priced to compete with the Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio. What remains to be seen is whether GM can seriously contend for sales in a segment that Kia and Hyundai rule. Starting price for a base Aveo should be around $10,000.
