PERTH, Australia — Chinese carmaker Changan Auto, a partner of Ford and Suzuki, has with contracted Orbital, the Australian engine specialist, to provide it with direct-injection technology for its own four-cylinder engines.

Changan hopes Orbital's FlexDI technology will enable it to improve the fuel economy and lower the emissions of its current gasoline engines. If tests prove the new design is successful, it will reach production in a future Changan vehicle.

The 18-month contract is valued at $1.7 million.
