CATERHAM, England — The Caterham Seven Roadsport 125 Monaco is gambling on the appeal of the Monte Carlo lifestyle, with touches inspired by the roulette wheels found in Casino Square. But the British marque is not taking any risks with pricing on the special model, saying that it is offering a cut-rate deal for those who order one of the first 20 cars.

The first 20 cars are priced at the U.S. equivalent of $30,933. Once that deal ends, the pricing rises to the U.S. equivalent of $32,480.

The special model has a retro look with such details as brushed aluminum bodywork, black nose and wheel guards and red-and-white exterior trim patterned after the Monegasque flag. The cabin gets red and black trim "reminiscent of the roulette wheels found in Casino Square," Caterham said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Monte Carlo special edition is said to be inspired by Colin Chapman's original 1957 design.

It is powered by a 1.6-liter Ford engine and has a top speed of 112 mph.

Taller or more "American" size drivers should try the Toniq or the upper end Caterhams with the lengthened chassis instead.  The Toniq is new to the US this year and 2010 models are sold out.  The 2011s will have a 200HP Mazda MZR engine standard with a Kawasaki or Cosworth upgrade available.  Not bad for a 1,100lb car.

Cool car, but can it fit an American of American stature (6-4 in my case).  A friend's dad had an original Lotus 7 (I'm pretty sure it was an actual Lotus car, and not the Caterham version, but in those days I didn't know there was a difference) and even as a 6-2 150 lb high school student I could barely fit into the seat.
