Among the first sites to break the news and photos was Car Tribe, although Caterham itself teased enthusiasts earlier this week with a peek at the car's front end on its own Web site.
According to Car Tribe, the R500 Superlight will be built on the Series 3 chassis and will be fitted with a Ford 2.0-liter Duratec four-cylinder engine, rated at 263 horsepower and mated to a six-speed gearbox. Riding on 13-inch wheels and tires, the R500 Superlight reportedly will rocket from rest to 60 mph in less than 3.0 seconds.
The R500 doesn't look dramatically different from its siblings but gets some cosmetic enhancements and a revised cockpit.
When it goes on sale later this year, the R500 Superlight is expected to fetch a starting price of $73,000.
