- Top Gear TV show spawns a pair of iPod/iPad/iPhone app games.
- The Stig, of course, is at the heart of one of the apps.
- The other is a Stunt School game.
LONDON — Apple's App Store is richer by two new games, both based off the hit British TV show Top Gear. One, as might be expected, is based around the anonymous driver The Stig, while the other is a stunt-driving game.
BBC Worldwide is behind the pair of games, titled Top Gear: Where's Stig and Top Gear: Stunt School. They're downloadable for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch from the App Store.
The games have the same sense of humor that has long been cherished in the TV program. The Stunt School game lets players add jet engines, hang-glider wings and other unexpected modifications to their vehicles — some 2 billion combinations, says BBC Worldwide. Once set up, the vehicle can be raced for fastest lap time against, who else, The Stig. There are 60 different challenges available, all on a virtual version of the Top Gear test track.
Where's Stig? takes players all over the world in search of the elusive driving ace and his "famous friends." The Top Gear Web site reassures that The Stig is "tame" and adds that "in none of the scenarios is he writing a book" — an obvious jab at the just-retired ex-Stig who did.
Top Gear: Stunt School costs $3.99, or $4.99 for the iPad, while Where's Stig? is priced at $2.99 or $3.99 for the iPad, all from iTunes.
Inside Line says: Let's see, 350 million people watch Top Gear worldwide, in 170 countries.... The app downloads should mount up at a dizzying pace. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
