Summer Reading: Racing Women and Classic Auto Ads

    0 Ratings
NEW YORK — Just in time for Father's Day and light summer reading, two new books for car fans cover the endlessly fascinating topics of car advertising and women in racing. 20th Century Classic Cars is a visual history of the automobile through print ads, while Fast Ladies: Female Racing Drivers, 1888-1970, chronicles the history of women in racing during a period of time when they were almost invisible.

Fast Ladies is the work of Jean-François Bouzanquet, himself a historic-car racing driver, and is illustrated with more than 400 photos of such interesting characters as "Bugatti Queen" Hellé Nice, and "Hyena of the Gestapo" Violette Morris, as well as better-known drivers such as Denise McCluggage and Pat Moss. It is published by Veloce Press in the U.K. and is available in the U.S. as a preorder from Amazon.com for July 1 shipping, priced at $37.77.

20th Century Classic Cars is the joint project of cultural anthropologist and graphic design historian Jim Heimann and New York Times automotive design writer Phil Patton. Patton has served as a consultant for automotive art exhibitions at the Phoenix Art Museum and New York's Museum of Modern Art. In addition to a decade-by-decade history of the automobile, it has an illustrated timeline. Priced at $39.99, it can be ordered directly from the publisher.
