Steve Fossett Land Speed Racing Team Seeks "Supersonic Woman"

SPARKS, Nevada — A cockpit "built on the small side" has prompted the Steve Fossett World Land Speed Racing Team to issue a plea for a "supersonic woman" to pilot a jet-powered car to a new "Absolute Supersonic Land Speed Record."

The 48-foot-long racing craft, which looks like it would be at home on Mars, is said to be ready for static engine tests on January 19, followed by "low-speed rolling systems tests in February." The craft is powered by a single 40,000-horsepower S&S Turbine LM-1500 jet engine. It is said to have less than one quarter the drag of the current record holder, the Thrust SSC.

"We believe there are a number of women active in motorsports and aviation who are qualified to drive our jet car through the sound barrier and beyond," said Eric Ahlstrom, program manager. "A small driver will have advantages in entry/exit, visibility and control. The driver will be expected to provide detailed feedback data, run by run, that will build to the world record. We're doing something that's never been done before."

The team says all driver candidates are required "to bring sponsorship to the table along with their other qualifications."

Those interested can contact Ahlstrom via e-mail at eahlstrom@pyramid.net.

What this means to you: This could be a history-making moment for a qualified woman — not to mention an excellent idea for a new reality-TV show. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

If they are still looking for the fastest women I may have what you are looking for. She is Leslie Porterfield of Dallas Texas. Owner of High Five Cycles and holder of motorcycle land speed records. Here is a video bio of her.
