STUTTGART, Germany — It's no secret that Mercedes has been developing a new high-end sports car with gullwing doors based on its famous predecessors from the 1950s and '60s, but here's the first offering of what the production version may look like.

Spy photos of the new two-seater test mule hit the Web back in the summer, and rumor is, Mercedes plans to sell 3,000 to 5,000 cars per year, which will be assembled at the Mercedes home plant in Sindelfingen. The car's development, however, is being done by AMG in Affalterbach.

The 2010 model is reputed to include components from the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL, but will be slightly shorter in overall length. Similar to the former gullwing, the new car is expected to have a 620-horsepower V8, a tubular frame and rear-wheel drive. The car's official name is not yet known.
