DETROIT — The world's vehicle population hit 1 billion in 2010 — roughly one car for every seven people.
According to researchers at Ward's Auto, China fueled nearly half of the global growth, as it passed Japan for the world's second largest vehicle population, with 78 million cars on the road.
India also saw a growth spurt of nearly 9 percent, pushing its total to 21 million cars on the road.
Despite a lingering downturn in car sales, the U.S. still enjoys top spot, according to Ward's, with a total vehicle population of 240 million — about one car for every 1.2 persons.
China and India, which have human populations of well over 1 billion each, have a long way to go to catch up, in terms of vehicle "density."
According to Ward's, China now boasts one car for every 17 persons, while India lags well behind, averaging one car for every 56 persons.
Inside Line says: And the country with the world's second highest vehicle density? Italy, naturally, with one car for every 1.5 persons.

LOL Max. Go back to elementary school. IL is reporting on vehicle DENSITY. Let me put an example into more simple terms. If "x" country has 1 car for every 1 person, and "y" country has 1 car for every 2 persons, which country do you think has more cars per person, x, or y?
