The confirmation came outside federal court after Mayfield's attorney, Bill Diehl, mentioned the drug several times during a long argument against the driver's indefinite suspension.
Diehl's main dispute in court was that Mayfield has never shown any of the telltale signs that identify a meth abuser, including rotting teeth and sunken eyes. Mayfield has blamed the positive test on the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder drug Adderall and Claritin-D for allergies, but this claim has repeatedly been shut down by NASCAR's program administrator.
Diehl also insists that the federal guidelines allow a 72-hour window to have an independent lab analyze a sealed backup sample, which Mayfield apparently never had the opportunity to do.
"We will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jeremy Mayfield did violate the NASCAR substance abuse policy and tested positive for methamphetamines," NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said.
Mayfield is attempting to get reinstated today in time to travel to the weekend race at Daytona International Speedway. The court was adjourned until later this afternoon, so stay tuned for more information when the case continues and Mayfield's fate is decided.
