Indy 500 Winner Helio Castroneves Acquitted of Tax Evasion

MIAMI — High-profile Helio Castroneves, one of the Indy racing circuit's most popular drivers and a Dancing With The Stars champ, was acquitted on Friday of most charges that he evaded more than $2.3 million in U.S. income taxes, according to media reports. The federal jury here, however, hung on one count of conspiracy.

Castroneves, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, had been temporarily replaced on Team Penske by Australian Will Power, pending the outcome of the case. There was no reaction to the verdict on Castroneves' Web site as of Friday afternoon.

The jury also acquitted his sister on the tax evasion counts but also hung on the conspiracy. Michigan motorsports attorney Alan Miller was acquitted on all three counts of tax evasion and one count of conspiracy.

The jury deliberated for six days, following a six-week trial. Castroneves' attorney Roy Black told jurors in closing arguments that his client had only a rudimentary understanding of his financial affairs.

"Does anybody really think Helio Castroneves really made a financial decision?" he said. "All he did was drive — and drive he did."
