- We knew the script was underway.
- We knew every actor would return for another payday.
- We knew that Fast Five was making serious bucks.
- Now we know the sixth Fast and Furious movie is coming May 2013.
HOLLYWOOD, California — NBC Universal, dedicated to profitability, has announced a release date for the sixth film in the evergreen and subtle The Fast and the Furious series. There's still no final title (here's hoping "Furious 6" is it) but it's opening everywhere — from the sun's center right on out to Pluto — on May 24, 2013. All this is according to a report on Deadline.com.
Soon after Fast Five opened in April and began setting box office records, writer Chris Morgan — who wrote the last three films in the series — was tasked with coming up with a script for a sixth one. With the total worldwide box office haul for Fast Five about to pass $600 million, the fact that a sixth movie was coming was no surprise to anyone.
What is surprising is that Universal won't be opening the sixth film in April. Both the fourth (Fast & Furious) and Fast Five did record-busting business in April. By moving the release date to late May, Universal is betting that the series is strong enough to kick off the summer movie season. Late May weekends are usually reserved for releasing major tent pole releases featuring familiar characters (Spider Man) or pre-sold event films like Star Wars movies. That's a lot of faith to put in the fifth sequel to a modestly budgeted 2001 movie with no major stars that was solely intended to exploit the fad for import street racing.
Cast members from the previous films, now all convinced F&F is the bread, butter and milkshakes of their careers, are sure to all return for this next one. Producer Neal H. Moritz will head the production and Justin Lin will be in the director's chair for the fourth straight time.
Universal has also promised that the F&F franchise will continue to evolve from its car-saturated roots into a "heist action" series. So maybe this one won't have any cars at all...just Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson sitting in a bare room discussing existentialism and the realization of their own mortality.
Where's Dennis McCarthy's phone number?

The last movie was absolutely pathetic. I can suspend disbelief for only so long. Also, this is no longer a car enthusiast movie franchise, it's a Transformers-esque, non-nonsensical teeny movie franchise.
Has anyone else noticed how Paul Walker and Mark Vincent's careers haven't taken off like they should have? The first movie, while stupid, was a tremendous success and should have launched them but what significant movies have they done since then? They're very fortunate that there are lemmings and sheep willing to pay cash to see them "act" every two years or so.

Didn't fast and furious 5 just come out 2 months ago? What is this one, a movie made up of all the parts that were edited out of the last one?
