GLENDALE, California — Late-night talk show host Jay Leno sure puts the grand in grand marshal.
The Tonight Show host, who was grand marshal Sunday of Love Ride, one of Southern California's biggest motorcycle shows, helped a motorcyclist after he had gotten into an accident during the ride.
Leno accompanied the injured man to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, Los Angeles City Councilman Mitch Englander told the Los Angeles Daily News. His condition is unknown.
Englander and his wife, Jayne, rode his Harley-Davidson in the event next to Leno. After the accident, Englander laid flares down around the motorcyclist and waited for paramedics.
"To see someone injured like that, we were very shaken up," Englander told the Daily News.
Not long after that accident, another occurred during the 30-minute charity ride. A male motorcyclist and his female passenger died after hitting a big-rig truck on the northbound Golden State Freeway at Branford Street near Pacoima. The two, believed to be in their 40s, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Founded in 1984 by Oliver Shokouh, owner of Glendale Harley-Davidson, the Love Ride benefits Autism Speaks, a New York-based autism research and advocacy group.
Besides being its grand marshal and helping the injured rider, Leno donated 10 private, guided tours of Jay Leno's Garage, famous for its rare and unusual motorcycles and cars—an enthusiast's dream.
About 2,000 bikers registered for this year's Love Ride.

"Jay Leno's big heart is refreshing on the Hollywood scene."
How is it having a big heart to help someone who got injured in your own motorcycle ride event??
It would be news if he DIDN'T help the guy. Thats just common human decency. What a joke of an article.

Diana is absolutely right! I too was standing in the front row & heard Leno say those exact words. I thought it was odd & was even uncomfortable w/it. I understand that he may have only been joking but still don't understand why anyone would even think of saying something so negative. What you put in the Universe will come back. I also rolled past the accident 5 min right after it happened & will always have that horrific accident of losing a brother & sister rider in my head. God Bless the all the people that stopped to help till emergency attention got there and my prayers & blessings go out to their families. May all the Angles cover and comfort you in this time.

This article fails to include the "joke" Jay Leno made before the event:
"Every year, [the organizer] says, 'Drive safe,'" Leno told the crowd in kicking off the 28th annual Love Ride in Glendale. "I'm gonna say, 'Don't drive safe.' I wanna see somebody go down. So it'll be fun. I want it to be in front or behind me and see a whole row of bikes go down. Get drunk, fall off the road. We've all become too damn polite ... we haven't had one incident."
