2008 Geneva Auto Show: VW's Green Theme

GENEVA — While the neo-Scirocco should draw considerable attention to Volkswagen's display at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show, the German automaker's hyperfocus on green powertrain technology will also be a crowd pleaser.

VW is offering a veritable smorgasbord of clean propulsion systems, including the Golf TDI Hybrid, the Passat Wagon TSI EcoFuel and the Sharan BlueMotion.

The Golf TDI Hybrid features a 73-horsepower 1.2-liter engine, an electric motor and a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox, all of which contribute to the car's exceptional fuel economy average of 69 mpg.

The Passat Wagon TSI EcoFuel is fitted with a 148-hp 1.4-liter turbocharged direct-injection engine that is designed to run on natural gas or regular gasoline and returns up to 43 mpg. A production version is due by year-end in both sedan and wagon configurations.

The Sharan BlueMotion is the latest addition to VW's clean-diesel portfolio, and is slated to go into production later this year. Its 2.0-liter TDI engine returns a combined 38 mpg.

What this means to you: It's not clear how much of this advanced hardware will make it to the States, but look for some of VW's green technologies to find their way across the Atlantic in the next year or two. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
