2008 British Auto Show Preview: The Art of Disguise, According to GM

BEDFORDSHIRE, England — General Motors' Vauxhall affiliate is ramping up for the mid-July launch of the new midsize Insignia at the 2008 British Auto Show. In the meantime, Vauxhall and sister brand Opel are busy testing prototypes of the Vectra replacement on European roads, fitted with the usual heavy disguises — only this time, Vauxhall has spilled the beans.

Want to know what an Insignia in full camo looks like? Vauxhall has obligingly provided a series of images of the car, in various stages of disguise. Part of the intent, according to the company, was to make the prototype look "as ugly as possible."

That means a heavy-handed application of plastic, foil, adhesive and other materials to hide the car's overall contours and various design details. Vauxhall also is experimenting with "fishies" and "flimmies" — different patterns intended to "confuse" spy cameras.

If you want to get at least an early glimpse of the car that is likely to replace the Saturn Aura in the States, check out the accompanying official images.

What this means to you: OK, all you would-be spies. Now that Vauxhall has spilled the beans and showed you what to look for, go get 'em! — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
