2006 Cadillac XLR-V
What's Special About It?
Bob Lutz, chairman of GM North America, was joined on stage by real estate mogul and recent television celebrity Donald Trump, to introduce a high-performance V-Series version of the rear-wheel-drive XLR roadster.
Trump, said to be poking around the Cadillac display with the premise of picking up his stretched DTS, remarked that "I think I like this more than a limo."
Hair aside, maybe Trump isn't so bad after all?
The big difference between the XLR-V and the standard XLR is horsepower. The XLR-V gets the supercharged 440-hp Northstar V8 and Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed transmission that is used in the STS-V sedan. That's a 120-hp improvement, and according to Caddy, it's enough stomp for a 0-to-60-mph performance of less than 5 seconds.
GM has also tweaked the chassis in order to support the additional power, incorporating 19-inch wheels, new cross-drilled disc brakes, larger stabilizer bars and a performance-calibrated Magnetic Ride Control system.
Like all of its V-Series relatives, the XLR-V features a wire-mesh grille and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The interior has also been enhanced with ebony-tinted wood grain and aluminum accents. Also making their debut on this model is a pair of adaptive forward headlights, which automatically adjust themselves up to 15 degrees to improve nighttime visibility.
What's Edmunds' Take?
If Donald Trump's hairstyle and garish penthouse are fair indicators of the man's taste, then Bob Lutz and General Motors should shudder at the thought of his appreciation of the XLR-V. The fact that we like it, however, should fill the halls and cubicles of GM's headquarters with high fives and hardy handshakes. — Phil Lienert
