    WASHINGTON — General Motors is recalling 97,843 2011 vehicles for defective seatbelts, including the 2011 Cadillac SRX, 2011 Chevrolet Equinox and 2011 GMC Terrain, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

    "The driver and/or front passenger safety belt buckle anchor may fracture and separate near the seat attachment in a vehicle crash," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "The safety belt system may not restrain the occupant[s] as designed and could increase the risk of injury."

    In other documentation filed with the federal government, GM said the defect was found during two seatbelt development tests conducted September 15 and 16, 2010, at the Milford Proving Ground. In those tests, the driver seatbelt buckle anchor separated.

    "Records confirmed there was an unauthorized change to the anchor tooling that resulted in a different part geometry and reduced anchor strength than the original part," said GM.

    Dealers will modify the passenger and/or driver safety belt buckles. The recall is expected to begin on January 18. Owners may contact Cadillac at (866) 982-2339, Chevrolet at (800) 630-2438 and GMC at (866) 996-9463.

    @ kevinlch

    I thought the same thing. But this recall does highlight the downside of a shared platform and parts across the different brands

    @lions,

    A perfect car?! You don't own a car right? Even Rolls Royce had a recall this year so please tell me what perfect car you drive.

    I'm tired of excuses from Auto makers, I don't care which country they come out of. Make mine perfect or don't expect me to buy it.

    GM found a problem during their own testing.... Well that's great that GM didn't hide it like Toyota and recall 1.5 million in one year. However, GM should have tested these vehicle prior to them hitting the showroom floor and then taken care of it prior to any units being sold.

    GM's recall is no where near Toyota's, but given GM's recent history, they need to be as perfect as possible in order to truely receive the "buyer" confidence that they are hopeing for.

    People want to bash GM for finding an issue during their OWN TESTING. It's not like they tried to hide the problem, like Toyota did...

    A broken seatbelt is a much worse problem than a stuck pedal...  I know how to stop the gas.  Neutral.  I don't know how to make my seatbelt hold me in if it's not connected strongly enough.

    Yeah, Gm recalls 98,000.

    Toyota 15 MILLION this YEAR ALONE!

    But haven't said that GM recall the seatbelt problem before anything happens.
