The new crossover, which will share its platform with the Saab 9-4X among other GM vehicles, has been referred to primarily as the BRX during development. Media assumption was that since the current station wagon-like model only ever garnered half of its projected annual sales, applying the SRX moniker to the new vehicle would be an albatross. Apparently, Cadillac feels there's some equity in the original three-letter combo.
Alphabet names have been problematic for Cadillac before. The company once planned to call the Corvette-based XLR roadster the CLR. This was before someone at GM headquarters realized that CLR was also the name of an acid-based cleanser for removing calcium, lime and rust stains from toilet bowls.
The entry-level 2010 SRX will most likely come with the 210-horsepower 2.8-liter V6 currently used as the base power plant in the European CTS sedan. A larger 300-hp 3.6-liter V6 will also be offered with a six-speed automatic transmission.
The 2010 Cadillac SRX is expected to debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, and will go on sale before the end of next year.
What this means to you: SRX club members can rest easy knowing their embroidered jacket won't soon be outdated. — Daniel Pund, Senior Editor, Detroit
